Downtown Glendale is a vibrant and diverse community where it is possible to work, play, eat and relax without ever getting into your car.
Housing is primarily apartment buildings, both vintage and contemporary along with condos and luxury town homes. The Americana offers mixed residential and retail with it's high end condo units. A few craftsman, Italian Renaissance and bungalows have survived and remain, as scattered jewels, among the higher density housing.
Destination retail is at the venerable Galleria and the new landmark shopping and residential complex called the Americana. Highlights, for me, are the pannini sandwiches at Cafe Primo, people watching from the balcony at Barnes and Noble, and Banana Republic at the Galleria. The Glendale Fashion Center is also downtown - and they have a Nordstom's Rack. A gal has her priorities!
Dining is getting better with the world class Palate (if you haven't been there you can not call yourself a foodie. Must. Go. Now.) located at the south end of Brand and the ever delectable Porto's Bakery. The Guava Cheese pastry here is very dangerous.
Entertainment comes from the high quality Centre Theater, the amazingly beautiful Alex Theater and, for now, at least, the Noise Within. Of course, there are all sorts of movie theaters.
